Couples Often Are Not Prepared For Emotional Rollercoaster

A variety of emotions can motivate homebuyers and sellers. For some, it is an unwanted or unexpected experience from a change in careers, lost of a job or change in job location. Others reasons that couples may not welcome the sale or purchase of a home can be because of additional space required to care for a family member, the birth of a child or as couples face the impending "empty-nest" experience.

Any of these experiences and reason can produce a myriad of emotions, ranging from apprehension, anger, frustration, resentment, excitement, happiness, and appreciation. Regardless of the emotions experienced by one or both partners, a common emotional reaction that the couple-unit will face and experience is fear. Fear about when to buy/sell, the price of the property, the neighborhood and a host of similar unknown and unpredictable factors.

Everyone, regardless if you're a first-time buyer/seller or your an experienced real estate investor, we are are faced with the same issue: how best to minimize the impact of the negative emotions and increase the impact from the positive emotions. 

As Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists, Erica and Eric recommend that the couple focus on clear, precise and vulnerable communications. It is quite common for couples who do not excel at clear and effective communications may find themselves in more and more conflict. Often the experience the couple is going through is not the direct cause of the conflict. Rather, it is usually the underlying communication challenges that have plagued the couple - but where never addressed.
